History and Philosophy of the Women’s Centre

The concept of the Women’s Centre originated within the Yukon Status of Women Council in 1973. Due to the lack of funds as well as rental space available, the idea was temporarily set aside. In June 1975, a suite became available in the Y.W.C.A building. Finally, with enough rent to cover two months, the idea became a reality. The Centre was named for Miss Victoria Faulkner, who had recently retired as secretary to numerous Commissioners of the Yukon. On Friday, January 31, 1975, the Victoria Faulkner Women’s Centre was officially opened with Miss Faulkner in attendance. On September 16, 1976, it became a registered society and we have been in our present home for five years.

With the philosophy of women helping women, the Centre is a special place for friendship, information and the sharing of skills and experiences. It is a warm, safe, inclusive atmosphere whose purpose is to support women. We advocate the basic rights of women as people including: free choice of employment, adequate housing, childcare, legal advice, medical attention, and control over our own bodies.

Over the years, the Center has worked to provide programs information and programs to women that directly affect the quality of their lives. We have listened to women through forums and public meetings and have worked to create solutions for their concerns.

Within the context of its philosophy and objectives, the Women’s Centre operates to serve and support women. We have contact with women’s groups on a local and national level, and though we consider ourselves active participants in the women’s movement we do not insist that our members be feminists or activists. We exist to serve and support all women no matter what their philosophy or politics.

Some of the first activities held at the Centre included lectures and discussions on law, debt, divorce, court processes and welfare rights. Guest speakers covering topics such as sexual assault, education, women’s status and employment programs were also given. Over the years the Women’s Centre has continued to provide programming and services for women. The Centre has also organized annual events such as: Take Back the Night Marches, December 6 th Memorials and International Women’s Day celebrations. These events are all recognized in an effort to remember difficulties and issues that are still apparent in our society as well as celebrate the accomplishments of women in order to celebrate women themselves.

The Women’s Centre is a vibrant and integral part of the Yukon. We are proud of all we have accomplished, and proud of the women we meet and the circumstances they overcome. We look forward to the continuation of present programming and exciting new initiatives and partnerships. Come and be a part of the Women’s Centre. You will be working for change in the lives of women and their families!
