Rural Pregnant Moms Program

Cynthia Kearns Suite for Yukon Rural Pregnant Moms

The Rural Pregnant Mom's Suite, named for the volunteer woman who was a driving force in its development, is a 2-bedroom suite on the lower floor of the Victoria Faulkner Women's Centre. The Suite was established to provide free accommodation for the two week period prior to the scheduled birth of a child, when it is recommended that an expectant mother come to Whitehorse.

The suite is available on a first-come, first-served basis, but tentative bookings are encouraged. The suite can accommodate two couples at the same time, with the living room, kitchen and bathroom serving as shared areas. The rooms are equipped with sheets, towels, and locks, with shared cooking equipment, cable TV and VCR/DVD player.

The Women's Centre is located in downtown Whitehorse, within walking distance of a medical clinic, shopping, and government offices. The Whitehorse General Hospital is a quick 10-minute drive from the Centre.

What does the Summer Student do?

The Summer Student designs and implements an educational and recreational program for low-income moms and their children (up to 8 years of age). Check out the 2008 Moms and Kids Program brochure!

The Summer Student assists with Drop-In Duties on her non-program days.

The Summer Student assists with any office work or special event work that needs to be done throughout her term at the Women’s Centre.

The Summer Student may take on any other approved duties or projects she feels capable of (for example: past initiatives have included organization of library, web projects etc.).

Who is the Summer Student?

The Summer Student is hired on an annual basis permitting funding is secured. The student must be currently enrolled in a college or university program and be returning to school in the fall. Applications are received throughout May every year and students are hired by the end of the month.

What does a Prenatal Coordinator do?

Under the motto of 'Give yourself and your baby the best start', the coordinator:

Provides a fun, informative and supportive atmosphere for the pre- and post-natal participants
Facilitates weekly drop-in
Organizes and coordinates various information and educational groups
Provides appropriate referrals
Organizes and facilitates various parenting programs
Reports to Public Health Agency of Canada
Coordinates, administers and facilitates the many aspects of this national project

What is CPNP: Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies?

The Canada Prenatal Nutrition Program (CPNP) is a Health Canada funded initiative to assist local community groups and organizations to address the needs of pregnant women and new mothers with infants up to 6 months of age.

The ultimate goals of this program are:

To ensure healthy birth weights
To promote and support breastfeeding
To ensure healthy eating habits
To improve long-term health for families
To empower women to make healthy lifestyle choices

What does the Women’s Advocate do?

The Women’s Advocate helps women:

to assess their options in times of crisis
to access informatin needed to make informed choices
to access basic services - financial, legal, social, housing and employment
to develop coping skills
by providing lay counselling for those in need
in dealing with government and community agencies
by empowering them to trust their own judgment and make positive choices

The Women's Advocate provides workshops on topics such as:

self-esteem
assertiveness
self-advocacy
other topics of concern and relevance to women

The Women's Advocate also responds to and facilitates drop-ins with the Program Coordinator.

The services of the Women’s Advocate are for all Yukon women.

Programming and Special Event Organizing.

Administrative tasks.

Responding to and facilitating Drop–In with the Women’s Advocate.

Developing strategies for recruiting and retaining volunteers and VFWC Members.
